For years, I lived with joint pain, exhaustion, muscle aches, vague “autoimmunish” diagnoses, food intolerances, leaky gut, hormonal issues, brain fog…and then, just when I thought it couldn’t get any weirder, vertigo showed up.
Mostly we just look at the isolated physical problem, but many times it isn’t just physical. I ignored my symptoms for a long time. I kept pushing through the fatigue. I didn’t listen to my body. I told myself this was just the price of motherhood, womanhood, modern life. But deep down, I knew something had to change.
Healing didn’t come from one pill or a quick fix. It came from five foundational shifts that were simple, but not easy. They were truly life-changing.
1. Cleaning Up My Diet
No more soda, no more artificial junk, no more “treats” that left me bloated and foggy. I focused on real, nourishing food…things that God made, not factories. I started thinking of food as fuel and medicine, not comfort or convenience. I have been on every elimination diet that you have heard of. It took a long time, but now I have finally figured out what truly nourishes me and what doesn’t.
2. Resting Without Guilt
I learned to pause, to rest, and to say no, even if it disappointed someone. I have learned to not always be available, and that rest isn’t laziness…it’s necessary and it’s healing. I was burnt out and with three little ones, a farm, and in a caretaker role I was saying yes to everyone else and carrying guilt anytime I needed to say yes to myself. I thought I had to just push through, but that was not the answer.
3. Seeking Alternative Help
I stepped outside conventional medicine and invested in practitioners who looked at the whole me, not just a list of symptoms where the only solution was a pill. Was it expensive? Yes. But when I considered how my health affects every area of my life…my family, my work, my joy…it was absolutely worth the financial sacrifice. We spend money on so many frivolous things…vacations, cars, home decor, entertainment…the list goes on and on. But when it comes to our health we stay confined to our insurance benefits which don’t always get us very far in our healing journeys.
4. Tending to My Emotions
I stopped ignoring my pain and started sitting with it. So many of us carry trapped trauma, resentment, grief. I began doing the work of feeling it, releasing it, and letting God heal places I didn’t even know were broken. Connecting with God alone is healing. Letting God be a crucial part of my healing journey was huge!
5. Rewiring My Thoughts
This one’s big. I started looking at my thoughts like a gardener inspects the soil. Were these thoughts helping me grow? Or were they choking the life out of me? I learned to prune, replant, and create new patterns in my brain. What we think, we become. Our thoughts are crucial and completely related to our physical bodies. It isn’t an area that we tend to examine when our health is suffering, but it really does make such a difference.
Being burnt out and sick is hard.
Living in pain is hard.
Battling fatigue and dragging through life is so very hard.
But you know what’s harder in the long run? Staying there.
It’s also hard to give up soda.
Hard to say no.
Hard to miss out.
Hard to stop scrolling on your phone at night before bed.
Hard to rest when you’re used to hustling.
But the reward of healing, of waking up with energy, peace, and purpose in your body, is so much better than the exhausting work of just surviving each day in a body that’s breaking down.
