How to Stop Nagging Thoughts from Hijacking Your Peace

Have you ever had a thought that just wouldn’t leave you alone? The kind that slips in during the quiet of the night, rewinds itself over and over again in your mind, and refuses to be ignored? You try pushing it away. You tell yourself to stop thinking about it. You stay busy, distract yourself, pray it disappears.

But it keeps showing up, uninvited and unwelcome.

The truth is, those nagging thoughts don’t leave just because we ignore them. More often, when we try to shove them down, they don’t go away, they just hide. And hiding isn’t the same as gone. Eventually, they resurface, usually louder and more twisted than before.

If we want peace, we need to do more than silence those thoughts. We need to confront them.

So how do we deal with the thoughts that haunt us?

Step 1: Identify the Thought

First, give the thought a name. Bring it into the light. Write it down, speak it aloud, and look at it for what it is. Just recognize it.

Step 2: Put It in the Hot Seat

Scrutinize it. Ask yourself: Is this thought true? Where did it come from? What story am I telling myself because of it? Be honest. Be curious. Notice how this thought makes you feel.

Step 3: Choose a Better Thought

Here’s where the shift happens. What would you rather believe instead? What thought would bring peace, connection, clarity, or hope? Find a thought that is both believable and better. Something your heart can truly grab hold of.

💜Now here’s the beautiful part: our feelings are not random. They are the direct result of our thoughts.

If you don’t like how you’re feeling, identify the thought behind it, change that thought, and your feelings will begin to shift.

Let me share a personal story.

Recently, I found myself irritated, really bugged, by someone’s inconsiderate decision. It wasn’t a huge deal, but it rubbed me wrong and I couldn’t shake it. I didn’t want to feel this way. I wanted the tension to disappear. But the narrative in my head kept growing. I started imagining all sorts of motives behind their decision. I convinced myself they were being hurtful on purpose.

That one thought spiraled into frustration and distance.

I tried ignoring it, staying busy, shoving it deep down. But it kept coming back. Finally, I stopped and faced it.

I said out loud: "I’m thinking this person hurt me on purpose." I knew it wasn’t true, not really.

Then I asked myself, what do I want to believe instead?

I chose this: "They were doing their best with what they had."

And just like that, the irritation began to melt. The story changed. The feeling changed. And the peace I wanted found its way back in.

Your mind is powerful.

What you think creates what you feel.
