There was a time I thought I could do it all. And not just do it all, but do it all well. I felt strong. Capable. On top of the world. So I said yes. Yes to plans, to commitments, to projects, to people. I packed my schedule full because I thought I could handle it. I felt invincible.
Until I wasn’t.
Life has a way of humbling us, doesn’t it? One unexpected thing gets thrown into the mix - an illness, an injury, a family emergency, a sudden wave of exhaustion - and suddenly, everything I was juggling comes crashing down.
And there I am, lying in the wreckage, wondering how I got here again.
We can live at max capacity for a little while. In fact, there are times when we have to. Life demands it. But when max capacity becomes our default setting, when we make our home there, we are heading for disaster.
It’s like running an engine at full throttle, pedal to the floor, RPMs screaming. You might feel powerful for a while, but engines aren’t meant to run that way indefinitely. Eventually, something is going to give - an overheated engine, a blown gasket, a complete breakdown.
And our bodies? They work the same way. Chronic stress - living in a perpetual state of too much - is the breeding ground for so many midlife health issues:
I know this cycle all too well. I spent years trapped in it. Saying yes when I should have said no. Pushing through when I should have rested. Ignoring the signs my body was giving me—little whispers at first, then louder warnings, until eventually, my body screamed at me.
And I crashed. Not once. Not twice. Over and over again, until I had nothing left.
I remember feeling like I had hit a wall I couldn’t push through. My energy was gone. My body ached. I felt like I was drowning in exhaustion and stress.
And the worst part? I had done it to myself. Again.
So, I did something radical.
I got help.
I found a life coach. Someone to stand by me, hold me accountable, and help me find a way to live within my actual capacity, not the fantasy version I kept trying to live up to. And let me tell you—it changed everything.
I won’t pretend I’ve mastered it.
In fact, here I am right now, overloaded, overcommitted, and sick.
Again.
Learning this lesson again for what feels like the hundredth time.
You’d think I’d have it down by now, but nope. Life has a way of bringing us back to our lessons until we finally, finally learn them.
And you know what? That’s okay.
God doesn’t expect us to be perfect. He knows our tendencies, our weaknesses, our patterns. He knows I get swept up in my excitement, in my desire to help, in my desire to experience life, to do all the things I want to do.
And He meets me in the mess of it.
Every.
Single.
Time.
But here’s the thing—I don’t want to live in this cycle. I don’t want to be constantly picking myself up off the floor, apologizing to my body for running it into the ground, asking God to rescue me from the chaos I created.
I want to walk in wisdom, not just resilience.
And wisdom tells me this:
So, my dear friend, let me ask you:
Are you doing too much?
Is your body whispering to you?
Are you feeling that ache, that fatigue, that tension creeping in? Are you waking up exhausted? Are you relying on caffeine and adrenaline to get through the day?
Listen to me - do not wait for your body to scream at you before you pay attention. Don’t let yourself run so hard, so fast, that your only option is a total breakdown.
You do not have to prove anything to anyone.
You do not have to do it all.
You do not have to burn yourself out to be worthy or valuable or enough.
You already are enough.
Leave space in your life - for rest, for recovery, for the unexpected. Say no when you need to. Drop the things that are breaking you.
Let yourself breathe.
God didn’t create you to run yourself into the ground. He created you to thrive, to live a life of joy and purpose - not one of exhaustion and stress.
So take this as your sign, your permission slip, your loving urgent message from someone who has been there:
Slow down. Before it’s too late.
Now, take a deep breath. Close your eyes. Ask yourself, Where am I at max capacity? Where do I need to create space?
Don’t wait until you crash to make a change.
